Citrine is a brownish-yellowish variety of quartz. Most citrine, including these tumbled stones, are made by heating natural amethyst. The iron mineral inclusions change the color from purple to yellow. This is different from ‘natural’ citrine, which gets its browner, more honey color from either natural irradiation/heating, or from gently heating certain types of smoky quartz. Ultimately, it is impossible to truly identify completely natural citrine. However, it is fairly easy to identify the heat-treated amethyst variety of citrine by its bright gold to orange-brown color and opaque white sections.
