Smoky quartz is a variety of clear quartz that was exposed to natural radiation from surrounding rock. The radiation activates color centers around aluminum impurities in the quartz causing a light yellow to dark brown color. (This is similar to how amethyst forms.). Smoky quartz is the national gem of Scotland, and is said to have been sacred to the Druids.
Smoky quartz is very balancing to the root chakra, and can help you move on from negative experiences to find support and stability. Use smoky quartz to help you release negative thought patterns and emotions.

These large tumbled stones are made of high-grade smoky quartz, and each has small rainbows when viewed from certain angles in direct light. The quartz is very transparent, and the smoky color is quite subtle in this batch - ranging from nearly clear to a pale yellow.
